When we first got to Roehampton, I saw that Wimbledon was just a short trip away, and knew I wanted to visit the tennis courts. Well, today we went! It was only a 15 minute bus ride to the grounds of Wimbledon, and we got tickets for a grounds tour as well as entrance to the museum.
The grounds were amazing and as beautiful as they look on tv! We saw the centere court, court 1, and court 18 (where the longest match was played in 2010 between Isner and Mahut) we got to see the entrance for Wimbledon members (and where they collect the prize money after the championship) The tour also included the press room where players meet after their matches, outside of the locker rooms where players change, as well as the glassed in 360 box at centre court.
In the museum, they had memorabilia from the 2012 London games, Maria Sharapova's shoes, and tons of outfits worn by tennis icons. The whole place was gated in and security was insane, but it was so beautiful and very elegant.
Our tour guide was precious, and told us how the championship got started (all because they needed 10 pounds to fix the Pony Roller, used to level the courts, and didn't have it, so they had a championship match and let the public buy tickets. Crazy how much money the club has now!) Of course there were pictures of Venus and Serena, Roddick, and Federer and the score boards even had the names from the 2012 championship, which was really cool to see.
The public can queue (wait in line) at the entrance during the championship matches and get tickets for 20 pounds or you can buy tickets for 5 years (5 championship tournaments) for a small price of $45,000. INSANE
I took a ton of pictures, so I'll try to narrow them down to my favorites for the blog. But definitely one of the coolest things I've seen since I've been here, and I will definitely be watching the championships this year :)
We are headed to Edinburgh tomorrow night!! SO excited! xoxox
